Metal material guide
Alloy Steel CNC Machining Service
Alloy steel is considered for loaded, wear-resistant or hardened parts. The steel designation alone does not define the part: heat treatment, hardness range, stock allowance and final machining sequence belong in the specification.

When Alloy Steel fits — and when to pause.
Loaded components
Compare required strength, fatigue and section size.
Wear surfaces
Define hardness and the surfaces that need finishing after heat treatment.
Tool steels
Treat D2 and similar grades as a separate heat-treatment and grinding problem.
Use a complete material designation.
The following examples are common ways buyers describe the family. They are not a stock list and they do not authorise substitution.
- 4140 / 42CrMo4 with condition specifiedConfirm supplier grade, condition, stock form and required documentation.
- 4340 / 34CrNiMo6 with condition specifiedConfirm supplier grade, condition, stock form and required documentation.
- 8620 for case-hardening routesConfirm supplier grade, condition, stock form and required documentation.
- D2 tool steel with heat-treatment planConfirm supplier grade, condition, stock form and required documentation.
RFQ material line
Alloy Steel · steel grade and final heat-treatment condition · stock form · quantity · required certificates · permitted substitutions.
If an application approval matters, name the regulation, edition and acceptance evidence.
Plan machining around the material behaviour.
Before or after heat treatment
Identify which features are roughed, hardened, finish-machined or ground.
Distortion risk
Leave stock and datums appropriate to the heat-treatment route.
Hardness verification
State location, scale and acceptance range if hardness is a requirement.
Specify the final surface and dimensions.
Black oxide or phosphate
Confirm alloy compatibility, corrosion expectation and final dimensions.
Plating
Call out masking, coating thickness and hydrogen-embrittlement controls when relevant.
Ground surfaces
Define final size, geometry and roughness after heat treatment.
Separate material identity from dimensional inspection.
Purchase specification, supplier documents, lot traceability and an agreed identification or test method where appropriate.
Drawing, datums, critical characteristics, inspection conditions and the required report format.
Use the relevant tester only when the drawing defines the parameter, method, location and acceptance range.
Reference and quotation boundary.

Alloy Steel machining questions.
How should Alloy Steel be specified for machining?
State the complete steel grade and final heat-treatment condition, the stock form, permitted substitutions and required documents. Add the drawing, quantity, finish and inspection requirements.
Does a listed grade mean it is stocked?
No. The examples help structure an RFQ. Availability, substitutions, price and delivery are confirmed for the project.
How are tolerances confirmed?
Tolerances depend on geometry, material condition, feature size, quantity, finishing and inspection conditions. Mark critical dimensions and datums; the quote confirms what can be held.
Can material documents and inspection reports be supplied?
State the required certificate, traceability and dimensional or test report with the RFQ. The available document set and test method are confirmed before production.
Bring the drawing and material into one review.
Send the CAD model or drawing, quantity, material designation, service conditions, finish and acceptance requirements.
